OBITUARY

MR JAMES A. STEWART P.A. WELLINGTON, May 21. Mr James Alexander Stewart, who was for 52 years on the staff of the A.M.P Society in New Zealand, died in Sydney on Thursday, aged 80. Born in Dunedin and educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, Mr Stewart joined the A.M.P. Society in 1884 at Dunedin and was later branch manager at Grey* mouth and Napier and manager of the industrial branch in New Zealand from 1908 until he retired in 1936. His retirement was spent at Wahroonga, Sydney.

MR R. A. CALDER

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 21. The death occurred at Lincoln College this afternoon of Mr Roy A. Calder, director of the agronomy division of the department of scientific and industrial research. Mr Calder was appointed director of the division in October last year and had been acting director since 1940. Mr Calder was born at Temuka and was a graduate of Canterbury University College and Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. He joined the Department of Agriculture in 1926. He was overseas studying plant breeding for three years and on his return to New Zealand in 1931 he became assistant to Mr J. W. Hadfield, at that time agronomist to the plant research station under Dr A. H. Cockayne, of the Department of Agriculture. The station was at'Palmerston North until 1937 when it was moved to Lincoln. Mr Calder spent six months in Britain during 1937 at various plant breeding stations. He was 44 years of age and leaves a widow and four children.
