JET INVENTOR

GRANTING OF AWARD PROPOSED

LONDON, May 20.

The Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors will consider on May 26 the granting of up to £50,000 to Group Captain Frank Whittle, R.A.F., whose inventions gave Britain and the Allies a lead in jet propulsion. Group Captain Whittle has not made any claims, and thinks it wrong to do so,

because his inventions were developed while serving in the Royal Air Force. The British Government gave him £IO,OOO on account, and offered him £48,000 for his shares in the jet-propul-sion project. Group Captain Whittle refused the offer, because he thought it embarrassing to his work as a Government technician.

If the commission awards £50,000, it will be free of income tax, and the largest award yet made.
