At a meeting of Federated Farmers In Dunedin this week it was decided to nominate Mr F. Waite, M.L.C., as a Dominion life member in recognition of his services to the farming community over a long period of years. Mr J. C. Walker, who has been manager of the National Bank of New Zealand at Mosgiel for the past two and a-half years, has received notice of his promotion to the managership of the bank’s branch at Greymouth. His successor at Mosgiel will be Mr T; A. Taylor (diploma of banking), of the Dunedin staff. Sir James Elliott has resigned from the State Literary Advisory Committee, of which he was chairman. On the nomination of P.E.N., Professor G. W. von Zedlitz has been appointed to the committee, which has chosen Dr Guy H. Scholefield as chairman in succession to Sir James Elliott. Mr Victor H. Loftus, formerly attache to the United States Legation in Rome, arrived at Auckland from Sydney yesterday to ;join the United States consular service in Wellington. Mr Loftus, who was • accompanied by his wife and daughter, will handle the legation finance. Before his Rome appointment he was in Mexico. The senior officers of the United Kingdom Joint Service Liaison Staff in New Zealand, which will take up Its duties in Wellington on June 20, will be Captain M. W. Richmond, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., R.N.; Colonel D. E. B. Talbot, D. 5.0., M.C.; Group-captain R. L. Kippenberger, C.8.E.; and Squadron Leader A. W. Southall, D. 5.0., D.F.C. Group-captain Kippenberger arrived in Wellington on Wednesday. Mr James A. Roberts, whose death occurred recently, was a member of the Otago Harbour Board from 1920 to 1925 as a representative of the payers of dues on ships. At a meeting of the board last night the chairman, Mr W. R. Clarke, paid a tribute to the work of Mr Roberts in the interests of progress. Mr Roberts was a man whom the country could ill afford to lose, he added. On the motion of Mr Clarke, a resolution was placed on record, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect to his memory.
