PAYMENT OF SALARIES DEPARTMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY P.A. WELLINGTON, May 20. The full costs of the salaries of kindergarten teachers and of full-time staffs of kindergarten training centres will be paid by the Education Department in future. Announcing this to-day, the Minister of Education, Mr McCombs, said the new scheme would replace the system of capitation and supplementary salary grants. All centres where there are kindergarten associations are affectea, but of the city staffs the teachers in Christchurch and Auckland will benefit most from the salary increases, which wiU be retrospective to April 1. The Minister said that kindergarten committees would still be required to find the additional funds necessary to carry on their work. Kindergarten staffs would be called upon to serve a minimum week of 24 hours instead of 15 as at present. The new salary scale was: —Principals, £425 to £475; directors £235 to £275; assistants, £2OO to £230 The increments would be at the rate of £lO a year.
