SMART TRIAL

REGAL e LILY’S GOOD MILE CANDIDATES FOR WASHDYKE Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, May 20. Regal Lily, a failure when tried over sprint distances, will be an interesting candidate in the Temuka Hack Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday following a smart trial over a mile on the trial grass at Riccarton this morning. She was joined by Irish Peach at the end of two furlongs, and at the finish Regal Lily was galloping on strongly a head in front to record lmin 41 l-ssec, the last half taking 51 2-ssec. The next fastest trial was the lmin 28sec recorded by Big Top and Sorry for seven furlongs. Both had had enough at the finish, but that was not surprising as they had sprinted the first three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. Though the South Canterbury Handicap candidates, Falconbridge and Mestiza took lmin 43 l-ssec for their mile, both could have improved as they were under nice holds over the final stages. Falconbridge was a neck in front after running the last half in 50,4-ssec, but Mestiza’s saddle had slipped. Julius Caesar and Helio, which are both coming on nicely, took 52 2-ssec for their four furlongs, their stablemate, Brixten, a half-brother by Neptune to Desert Fox, giving the Probation—La Vie colt a good start and a beating in 51 2-ssec. Blue Hussar shaded Gay Thread on the completion of five furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec, the first taking 14sec. Harley, after being off the scene for a long time, is to start at Washdyke this week. He is well forward and sprinted five furlongs in lmin 4 l-ssec, the first in 13sec. Theocritus went over the same ground in lmin 3 2-ssec, his first taking 13 2-ssec. Lilli Marlene was restricted to 52sec for four furlongs, Loch Lennox returning 51sec and Graeme 50 2-ssec. Rebel Night was of no use to Broic over the final stages of seven furlongs in lmin 32 l-ssec, Broie finishing a length and a-half clear after running the final four in 52 l-ssec. * Money Lender made up ground to be or. terms with Magnaform over four furlongs in 49 l-ssec. The speedy Dinard took lmin 3 4-ssec for five furlongs, the first in 13 4-ssec. She could have done better. Flying Orders was also well held during his four furlongs, run in 52 2-ssec. Dark Arrow beat Tikakoura by a length over seven furlongs in lmin 32 l-ssec, the last four being run in 52 l-ssec. Royal Robe ran home from the four furlongs in 50sec, time equalled by Our Style. After the Dunedin winter meeting the Invercargill trainer. R. E. McLellan, will quarter his team at Riccarton, having booked space with A. J. McLaughlin.
