LICENCE CANCELLED

WELLINGTON TAXI DRIVER SEQUEL TO BOOKMAKING CONVICTION P.A. WELLINGTON, May 20. Because he had been convicted on a charge of bookmaking, the taxi licence of Alfred George Smith was cancelled last night by the Wellington City Council on the recommendation of its By-laws Committee. Counsel for Smith said the regulations set out that the council might cancel a licence for reasons of .physical incapacity, incompetence or any other ground on which a man might be unfit to hold a licence. The question was: Did a conviction for bookmaking render a man unfit to hold. a taxi licence? There was no evidence, said counsel, that Shiith iVas engaged in bookmaking in connection with his taxicab.
