POTENTIAL DANGER

DUNEDIN OIL WHARF REBUILDING NECESSARY QUESTION FOR HARBOUR BOARD The berthage accommodation for tankers at the oil wharf, Dunedin, created a serious potential danger, stated the harbourmaster, Captain F. G. Macdonald, in a report to a meeting of the Otago Harbour Board last night. The Central Fire Brigade had offered its cooperation, and was advised when a tanker arrived at the wharf, he said. Captain Macdonald referred to the regulations governing berthage accommodation for tankers. These, he said, had been relaxed during the war but were now being enforced rigidly by the Marine Department. The harbourmaster said that he could not observe, these regulations fully under the present conditions, and asked the board not to hold him responsible to do so. He asked the board to build a new oil wharf. The report was neither discussed nor elucidated at the meeting. The chairman, Mr W. R. Clarke, said that a temporary improvement would be made to the present oil wharf, and he suggested that the report should be considered at the next meeting of the board. Members agreed. “The board must soon consider rebuilding the wharf.” Mr Clarke added.
