OFFER TO MINISTER

RESIGNATION OF SEAT

EXPELLED MEMBER’S ELECTION CHALLENGE

N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent LONDON, May 18.

Mr Alfred Edwards, Labour M.P. for East Middlesbrough, who has been expelled from the Labour Party owing to his criticism of the Government proposals for nationalising the iron and steel industry, has offered to resign his seat if the Minister of Health, Mr Aneurin Bevan, who is the chief advocate of the iron and steel nationalisation, will resign his own seat at Ebbw Vale and contest East Middlesbrough against him. Mr Edwards said East Middlesbrough, as one of the greatest steelproducing centres in Britain, was the ideal ground on which to test the feeling of the industry on the nationalisation issue. “I am sure that if Mr Bevan accepts my terms the Conservatives will stand down in Middlesbrough and give us a straight fight,” - said Mr Edwards. “Mr Bevan is the Goliath in this issue and I am the David—but I am sure David would be successful." Mr Edwards intends to tour the large industrial cities and deliver his speech on State control, which the Labour Party conference at Scarborough refused to hear.
