PLACES IN THE NEWS

Acre: Properly named St. Jean d’Acre, and the biblical Accho, it is one of the best of the small ports on the Eastern Mediterranean coast. Like most strategic points in the area, it has a long history of warfare—taken by the Crusaders in 1110, by Sultan Saladin in 1187, by Richard I in 1191 (at the cost of 100,000 men), and kept by the Knights of the Order of St. John by constant fighting over 100 years. Then came the Turks and the French, and, in 1832, the Egyptians. In 1840 it was., bombarded and taken by a combined English, Austrian, and Turkish fleet. It is the centre of the Bahai movement. Tiberias: The largely Jewish town on the Sea of Galilee, built about 20 years after the birth of Christ, was named by Herod Antipas for his friend the Emperor Tiberius. Here the Crusaders, founders of the modern town, lost their stronghold to Saladin’s Saracens in 1187. Antinquity’s celebrated hot-spring baths have been restored and are an attraction to visitors. The town is located about midway oh the western shore of Galilee.
