Gabriel Read Found Gold 87 Years Ago

On May 20, 1861, 23 years after the arrival of the first settlers in Otago, Gabriel Read discovered gold in the area now known as Gabriel’s Gully, near Lawi'ence. His discovery gave a great impetus to the development of the province. The site where he first found gold is marked to-day by the well-known pick and shovel. The memory of Gabriel Read was honoured in May, 1911, when over 300

miners assembled in Lawrence to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his discovery, and a memorial cairn was erected in a reserve adjacent to the town. To mark the seventy-fifth anniversary in 1936, oak trees were planted near the cairn by men who were associated with gold mining in the early days. To one tree is attached a plaque which states that the oak was planted by Joseph Gabriel Bentley, the first boy born in the district.
