OTAGO “WINDY”

AUCKLAND CHALLENGE

RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH

Daily Times Special Service

AUCKLAND, May 19. “It seems to me that Otago is just plain “ windy ” about meeting our challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, - ’ said Mr E. P. York, a selector and a member of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, in a discussion by the committee last night on the Otago Rugby Union's reply to Auckland’s challenge for the shield. The Otago Union stated that advice would be given if a suitable date for the match could be arranged. Mr York reported that while in Dunedin recently he had heard that Mv R. W. S. Botting, president of the Otago Union, had made a strong plea on Auckland’s behalf for a challenge match. However, the Otago Union had no Saturdays available and was not in favour of playing mid-week games. “The Otago objection to week-day matches is that their country players are not available,” Mr York said. “ In my opinion, this argument does not hold water, for they have accepted several other mid-week matches, and seem to be able to get their country players for them. I think they are windy about meeting us.’’
