STATE OF ISRAEL

AMERICAN RECOGNITION

BRITAIN STUDYING POSITION

NO DIPLOMATIC MOVES AT PRESENT

N.Z.P.A.—Copyright

Rec. 11 p.m. LONDON. May 18. The British Foreign Office is still studying the implications of the American recognition of the State of Israel set up by the Jews in Palestine, says the diplomatic correspondent of The Times. Britain, it seems, will decide only after the normal conditions for diplomatic recognition have been fulfilled; that is to say that there should be in existence a functioning administration, that the State should be able and willing to carry out its international obligations, and that its frontiers should be known. The juridical position, the correspondent adds, is admittedly extremely complicated. The Jewish State, he points out. was brought into being by its own efforts and not as a legal consequence of the UNO Assembly resolution of November 29, 1947. recommending the partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab States. There is nothing to prevent other Governments being set up in Palestine and some time must elapse before the position is clear, the correspondent says. • Russian Recognition Russia has officially recognised the Jewish State of Israel. Recognition followed a request from Mr Moshe Shertok. Israel’s Foreign Minister. The Russian reply stated that the Soviet hoped the creation of the Jewish State would strengthen peace and security in Palestine and the Middle East. It expressed confidence in the development of friendly relations between Russia and Israel.
