MR CHAPMAN’S RETIREMENT

The.expected arrival in Dunedin of Dr R. S. Aitken, who will become the first vice-chancellor and academic head of the University of Otago, is a matter of more than passing interest to the registrar of the University, Mr H. Chapman. At the end of, 1946, Mr Chapman announced his intention of retiring after many years of service but, at the request of the University Council, decided to continue in his post until six months after the arrival of the vice-chancellor. Mr Chapman’s long “erm of office appears now to be drawing nearer to its close and at yesterday afternoons meeting of the council it was decided to advertise for a replacement, the suecessful applicant to take up his duties on October 1. ' . ■ Mr Chapman has been registrar of the University for 37 years, his original appointment having taken effect in April, 1911. Before his appointment he was for seven years a master at the Otago Boys’ High School, his service there following a period of teaching in Canterbury.
