ROUGH TRIP

HINEMOA IN HEAVY SEA P.A. CHRISTCHURCH May 18. The sea in Lyttelton harbour to-day was the heaviest for more than 20 years. After two days of strong northeasterly winds, seas near the heads were at times breaking right across the harbour and all about the outer harbour seas were breaking high on shore. Minor damage was done at Gladstone pier where breaking seas scoured the ballasting from about two chains of railway line and distributed shingle over the other lines. Because of the scouring, the steamer express train from Christchurch this evening had to be divided before being taken on to the steamer express wharf. Although she arrived at Lyttelton on time this morning, the Hinemoa had an exceedingly rough trip from south of Kaikoura to Lyttelton. A very heavy following sea made conditions uncomfortable for all on board.
