DUNEDIN POLICE

NEW SUPERINTENDENT

MR D. L. CALWELL APPOINTED

The promotion of Inspector D. L. Calwell to the rank of superintendent and his appointment as officer in charge of police for the Dunedin district has been announced. Superintendent Calwell, who has been relieving in that position at Dunedin, succeeds Superintendent D. Scott, who recently retired from the force. Mr Calwell joined the police force in 1907, serving as a constable in Auckland and its suburbs until 1913. For the next four years he was in charge of the station at Houhora, North Auckland, and for another four years he was stationed at Kaitaia. In 1921 he was promoted sergeant, and while holding that rank he was on duty at Auckland city and Waihi. After his promotion to the rank of senior sergeant in 1932, Mr Calwell was for three years in charge of the Taranaki Street Station, Wellington. Appointments at Christchurch Central and Auckland Central followed, with the rank of sub-inspector. He was promoted inspector in 1941, and was for two years in charge of the Greymouth district. For the past four years he has been in charge of the Timaru district. Born in Victoria, Mr Calwell has two brothers serving in the Victoria police and one brother in the New Zealand police. One of New Zealand’s most notorious shootings and biggest manhunts took place while he was in charge of the Greymouth district. This was the Graham case at Koiterangi in October, 1941.
