A resolution, carried unanimously, was that the Dunedin Summer Show should be a Soyth Island Championship show. It was considered that this would be an advantage to the Royal Show at Invercargill a fortnight later. Improvement in Livestock

The primary object of agricultural and pastoral societies was to effect an improvement in the livestock - of the Dominion, said the president, Mr J. A. Edwards, of Gore. There was work for all to do, Mr Edwards said. He mentioned the need for constant vigilance by the society to attain the closest understanding among the various breed societies There was also a need for the careful selection of judges, for the safeguarding of actual show conditions, and for the encouragement and development of enthusiasm on the part of exhibitors and the public without whose goodwill shows would have great difficulty in carrying on. Mr Edwards referred to the last conference of the Royal Agricultural Society in Wellington in June, 1947, when the society had been successful in forming a United Breed Societies’ Association and Council.

After referring to the success of the Royal Show held at Hastings in October, Mr Edwards said he felt that Southland would be able to present an outstanding Royal Show at Invercargill in December of this year. Breeders and visitors would be attracted from all parts of the Dominion and from overseas. Election of Officers
