DR CHAIM WEIZMANN ILL Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, May 16. Dr Chaim Weizmann, 73-year-old Jewish leader who was to-day elected President of Israel’s Provisional Government, is under the care of a physician in New York City. One of his secretaries said to-night that he had retired and could not be disturbed even to be told of his election. She did not disclose the nature of his illness. Dr Weizmann, who is a chemist of international renown, was for years president of the World Zionist Organisation and the Jewish Agency. Dr Weizmann was born ‘■in Czarist Russia but for many years lived in Britain. He lost one of his two sons, a flight lieutenant in the R.A.F. in the Second World War.
