PLACES IN THE NEWS

Naharayim: The site of Palestine’s largest hydro-electric works, founded by the late Pinchas Rutherberg, opened in 1932, and belonging to the Palestine Electric Corporation. The plant is built at the junction of the Yarmuk and Jordan Rivers. A dam has formed an artificial lake into which the waters of both rivers are led. From the dam the water plunges down chutes nearly 90 feet high to create electric power sufficient to serve the needs of much of Palestine's industry. ’Amman: The capital of Trans-jordan, Rabboth-Ammon was the city’s full name of old, when it was the capital of the Kingdom of Ammon. Mute witness there of spent glory is the vast ruin of a Roman theatre, built when the town’s name was changed for a brief period to Philadelphia, City of Brotherly Love. Any brotherly love in ’Amman in recent weeks has been wholly Arabic, as the old city has been the headquarters of the Arab forces ’planning the war in Palestine. > Sea of Galilee: Thirteen miles long and about eight across at its widest point, the sea is shaped like a harp, thus receiving its 'ancient name of Chinnereth. Its waters are clear and sweet, and at one point over 150 feet deep. The surface of the sea is 696 feet below that of the Mediterranean. Jewish -colonies have revived agriculture on an intensive scale around Galilee. Christ, the Man of Galilee, preached in nearby Capernaum.
