IN POOR CONDITION

SHEEP ON PORT WAIKATO BRUISED AND NERVOUS P.A. WELLINGTON, May 17. Twelve hundred sheep, less about 30 casualties, which were shipped from the Chatham Islands on board the Port Waikato, were landed at the Petone wharf this morning after the Port Waikato had been taken there from the stream by a tug. The sheep, which were badly bruised by the rolling of the disabled ship, were in a pitiable condition and a highly nervous state, but all but two reached the wharf gates without trouble. They were then taken quietly along the waterfront and allowed to graze as they went to the stockyards, where they will be held until they are railed to-night to the Feilding sale yards. The exact number of sheep lost on the trip will not be known until the flock is counted, but it is believed that fewer than 30 died. Eleven died from crushing or broken necks or suffocation during Wednesday’s gale or on Thursday. Six died on Friday and three on Saturday, the carcasses being thrown overboard. Two horses, one carried on the deck, and the other below, arrived in good condition.
