OBITUARY

MR EDWARD J. WILSON

Mr Edward James Wilson, who died in Dunedin early this month, was born at Christchurch in 1873. His early years were spent as a blacksmith on the Longbeach estate and on Lagmhor, after which he started a business of his own at Westerfield. An accident followed by serious eye trouble forced him to give up his trade, so he turned his attention to farming, and for some years managed the Westerfield estate in the interests of Mr A. F. Roberts, the breeder of the famous racehorse Phar Lap. Later, Mr Wilson shifted south, where he undertook the management of Teviot station for the same owner. When the station was sold for closer settlement he took over the management of Hillsprings, an adjoining station, later going into partnership with the owner, the late Mr T. A. Pannett. Mr Wilson retired in 1926 to Mosgiel. where he resided until his death. He was a member of the Mosgiel Borough Council for 12 years and did much work in the interests of the community. He took a keen interest in all forms of sport, being a member of both the Dunedin Jockey Club and the Forbury Park Trotting Club for some years Mrs Wilson died three years ago and the only son met with a fatal accident 19 years ago. Mr Wilson is survived by six' daughters.
