HIGH SCORING
Basketball
WOMEN'S GAMES EX-GIRLS EXTENDED High School Ex-girls had to play sound basketball to beat Y.W.C.A. by 22—11 on Saturday. Kiwi beat High Schol Ex-girls B by 14 —11, and Ultimax won by 15—10 over St. Bernadette’s. Y.W.C.A. I v. H.S. EX-GIRLS Y.W.C.A. showed much-improved form and fully extended High School Ex-girls in the first half. The Y.W.C.A. centre, ably controlled by Lena Johnstone, combined excellently, and had no difficulty in getting the ball through to the forwards. The Ex-girls centre, perhaps through lack of practice, did not show first grade form. The Ex-girls’ forwards did not receive their usual share of the ball, and were lucky to bring the half time score to eight all. Play was still even in the second half until the last 10 minutes, when Ex-girls, showing a return to their usual form, drew ahead. The defensive play on both sides was fairly consistent, but Ex-girls could have made better use of their height if they had exercised more judgment. Dorothy Hutton led the Ex-girls’ forward third well, and was largely responsible for Ex-girls’ win by 21—11. The referee was Mrs J. A. Davie. ST. BERNADETTE’S v. ULTIMAX Ultimax defeated St. Bernadette’s by 15—10 in an evenly-contested game, and both sides showed improved form. The Ultimax forwards combined well throughout, with C. Knowles playing an outstanding game. For St. Bernadette’s, K. O’Connell, P. Gallagher, and P. O'Connell played well on' the defensive, and K. O’Connell made some brilliant interceptions. In the centre third the positional play of Ultimax was superior to that of St. Bernadette’s. The referee was Miss D. Swift. KIWI v. EX-GIRLS B Kiwi beat Ex-girls B by 14—11, and the game was even throughout, but some erratic passing marred play. The Kiwi centres proved slightly superior during the second half, and kept their forwards well supplied with the ball. The referee was Miss L. Johnstone.
