“MARVELLOUS CLIMATE”

PRAISE FROM VISITING CARDINAL P.'A. AUCKLAND, May 16. Thirty-two years to the day after he celebrated his first Mass in St. Peter’s, Rome, Cardinal Spellmap, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, said a Mass this morning at St. Mary’s Convent before leaving by air for Sydney, accompanied by 14 other dignataries. Cardinal. Spellman will visit the Far East before returning to America. “We have had only tnree days here and would have liked two more to visit the South Island and one for Rotorua,” Cardinal Spellman said in a farewell message to New Zealanders. “ I can well understand how the people of New Zealand have the longest expectancy of life in the world. It is because of the marvellous climate and other natural advantages. We carry away the same impression as our soldiers did of the hospitality and sincerity of New Zealanders.” Cardinal Spellman paid a special tribute to the helpfulness of the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and other Ministers, the Mayors of Auckland and Wellington, and the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary. On his way to the airport, Cardinal Spellman called at the Mater Hospital and spoke to the sisters and nurses and the afflicted. He was bidden farewell at the airport by Bishop Liston and the United States Consul, Mr Whitney Young.
