American Athlete Lowers World’s 100 Yards Record

Rec. 10 p.m. NEW YORK, May 15. Mel Patton, of the University of Southern California, to-day bettered the world’s record for the 100 Yards when he recorded 9.3scc at Fresno, California. Patton performed the great feat under ideal running conditions. The wind gauge showed under the 3.5 miles an hour required to make application for a world’s record. Three of the five timekeepers caught him at 9.3 sec and the other two showed 9.4. In lowa City, the Australian sprinter, John Treloar, ran an exhibition 100 yards in 9.ssec. It was his first race on a cinder track and he had to run against a strong wind.
