Camera Record of Natural Life on the Snares
(1) A large Sea Elephant basking in the sunshine. In the background is a Government-built “ Castaway ” hut, erected for the use of shipwrecked crews. (2) A colony of undisturbed Snares Island Penguins. (3) A Bullers Mollymawk sitting on its strongly-built and unusual nest. (4) A black Tomtit, which is found only on this island. Both male and female birds are black. Sixty miles away, at Stewart Island, male Tomtits have a black head and orange breast, and the female birds a grey head and orange breast. (5) A Bush Snipe, which is very much like a Kiwi in its habits. The Snares is possibly the only island where snipes -are not molested by cats, dogs, and wekas to any extent. (6) A yearling Snares Island Penguin just beginning to moult. Thousands of these penguins are found on this island, but not elsewhere. (7) A large Sea Elephant advancing toward -the photographer with gaping jaws. (8) A Fur Seal on the island. Although it was expected that large numbers of these seals would be found, actually fewer than 200 were seen.
