ASSASSIN CHANGES MIND
CARDINAL SAVED BY CROSS P.A. WELLINGTON, May 18. The pectoral cross worn by Cardinal Spellman when he attended a reception- yesterday in the Town Hall once saved the life of his friend, Cardinal Pacelli, now Pope Pius XII. In 1921, when Cardinal Pacelli was
Papal Nuncio at Munich, Karl Liebnicht, a leader of a Spartacist group, decided that he should be assasinated. Concealing himself behind a curtain <5 in the cardinal’s rooms he waited for him to enter, then stepped out and pointed a pistol at him. As he was raising the weapon to take aim Liebnicht’s hand struck the pectoral cross which the cardinal was wearing and he dropped' the pistol. He did not take any further action, and was allowed by Cardinal Pacelli to go free.- • The cross was later given to Cardinal Spellman., who was associated with Cardinal Pacelli at the Vatican in 1925. These details were given by Archbishop McKeefry.
