Following the sinking of a test bore to 465 feet, the City Council has decided to sink a large bore down to 175 feet. To prevent any possibility of waters from near the surface entering the completed hole, the 24-inch pipe is being driven to 65 feet, fully 20 feet into impervious measures separating the two independent water-bearing gravels. This will be followed by driving a screen pipe 18 inches in diameter 110 feet below the bottom of the 24-inch pipe. The water to be pumped will enter the slotted base from numerous seams of porous gravels throughout the full length of the pipe. These measures terminate on impervious strata of considerable thickness, below which a further bed of promising water gravels exists down to 320 feet. The photograph shows the 24-inch pipe being driven into position.
