Two Australian spur-winged plovers were sighted in the Dipton-Benmore area by sportsmen operating there on Saturday. About 15 years ago a pair of these Australian birds landed on the Borstal Farm at Invercargill. The conditions suited them and they began to breed. The colony now contains between 50 and 60 birds, and as time goes on they are expected to extend over a wide area.
