RENOWNED ECONOMIST

, \ « NEW PRESIDENT OF ITALY STRUGGLE AGAINST FASCISM N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, May 13. The new President of Italy, 75-year-old Professor Luigi Einaudi, formerly Vice-premier and governor of the Bank of Italy since 1945; is famed world, wide as an economist. He was appointed a senator in 1919 by King Victor Emmanuel, but he steadfastly opposed Mussolini and regularly voted against Fascist laws. He was ousted from his professorships at Turin and Milan, but for more than 10 years he edited a journal in which he tried gallantly to kindle the Liberal ideal under the pretence of scientific research. That he did not suffer worse persecution was probably due to his international reputation as an economist. He was crippled in an accident —but to escape the Germans he walked across the Alps to Switzerland in 1943. The Italians know him mainly because his name appears on all banknotes. The modest, scholastic little man, savs the Daily Herald, is proud that he has improved Italy’s finances without a five-year plan.
