TAXI INDUSTRY REVIEW
INQUIRY COMMITTEE FORMED SURVEY OF CURRENT PROBLEMS Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 13. All current problems in the taxi industry will be under review by a committee of inquiry whose personnel is expected to be announced by the Minister of Transport, Mr Hackett, within the next week. The committee was originally sought by trade union organisations who were concerned in particular about employment conditions in the industry. The order of reference, however, is expected to include most aspects of the industry, including licensing and the service given to the’ public. It is expected that the tribunal will sit in all the main centres and in certain other cities, including Invercargill. The Municipal Association has nominated Mr P. Thompson, of Stratford, as its representative on the commission, and the Federation of Labour, has chosen Mr W. B. Richards, president of the Otago Trades Council, as its nominee. The New Zealand Taxi Proprietors’ Federation' asked for arid was given the right to appoint a representative, and chose its president, Mr H. W. Newallf of Dunedin. It is understood, however, that this appointment was not acceptable to the Minister, who may choose a different industry representative. The Transport Department will also have representation on the commission.
