QUEEN WILHELMINA TO ABDICATE “INTERESTS OF KINGDOM” THE HAGUE, May 12 Queen Wilhelmina announced in a broadcast that she would abdicate "at the beginning of September ” in favour of Princess Juliana. Queen Wilhelmina said her reason was “ an increase in years, and a decline in the power of resistance and ability to work, and of the powers which are indispensable in making responsible decisions in the profound and complicated problems of which there are so many at present.” Queen Wilhelmina said it was only at Princess Juliana’s urgent request
that she postponed transferring the Throne to her until after August 31, and the celebration of her 50-year reign. “My father was sworn in and installed on May 12, 1889, and I believe I can choose no better day than this to speak to you about the future. I believe I must, in the interests of you all and of the kingdom, entrust the sovereignty to Princess Juliana, who, apart from her wise insight, also has the advantage of her age and her young, fresh powers. I reached this conclusion only after ripe consideration and a conviction that snly your interests .and my feelings of duty weie decisive.”
