VALUE IN MINING DISTRICTS OPPOSITION LEADER’S INTEREST p.A. WESTPORT, May 13. The need for amenities for people residing in coal mining townships in the Buller district was appreciated by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland during a tour of Denniston, Burnett's Face, Millerton, Stockton and towns on the fiat yesterday. Various methods by which the residents had tried to develop a community spirit were explained by Mr T. McGhie, who besides being the superintendent of State mines in Buller, is also head of the community centre movement, which has now seven active branches. Mr Holland was particularly interested in the scheme by which miners contribute Id in the £ from their wages towards the centre funds, which would provide up to £ISOO or £I6OO a year. He was told that the centre helped in providing buses for people, including scores of young mine employees, attending evening classes at • the Westport Technical High School and also paid the expenses of a dressmaking instructress to give country lessons.
