UNIONIST MONOPOLIES

Sir, —During the Labour Federation Conference a remit was tabled suggesting the necessity for an inquiry into the operations of monopolies which it was thought were operating to the disadvantage of the people. Although unions can be legally established and the employment of unionists is compulsory, have not many unions now become a monopoly, the actions of which are detrimental to the interests of the people and of the country? At the instigation not of the Governmetn entirely but principally of the Federation of Labour, the Price Tribunal is so treating the merchants that there is a grave possibility many may not have sufficient reserves to meet any recession in trade. Should this happen the working people will be the greatest sufferers. The attitude of the Socialist members of the British Government towards the Hague Conference, because it has been sponsored by Mr Churchill is evidence of how prejudiced is the attitude of the average Socialist. All wisdom is vested in them apparently. A review of the past years shows what a poor showing Socialist Governments have made in Britain. A French writer said years ago “ Wisdom, which means balance and harmony, is only met with in individuals. Democracy which means the rule of the masses give preponderance to instinct, to nature, to the passions, that is to say to blind impulse, to elemental gravitation to generic fatality.”—l am, etc., Filius Populi.
