STATE LITERARY FUND

Sir,—The other day a friend, whom I met in the street, remarked, “ I see the Government is being very kind to you.” The reference was to a recently-published item of news relating to grants from the State Literary Fund to certain publishers. As it may not be generally known why such grants" of public money are made to publishers, will you kindly permit one of them to make a brief explanation. The grants are in the nature of subsidies sufficient to enable books of national importance to be produced without loss, or with the minimum risk of loss, and which could not otherwise be made available.— I am, etc., A. H. Reed.
