THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT
Sir, —Allow me to draw your attention to an incident which, to say the least, does not throw a good light on the management of city affairs. Some time ago the Transport Department called for ap- . plications from its employees for the position of inspector. Last week an employee was notified he had received the position. This was later confirmed by letter from the manager. When he came in this week to take up his new position he was informed that the appointment had been cancelled on the authority of <the Transport Committee, and the applications were to be reviewed. One member of the staff has openly stated that he had approached Cr Anderson and complained that he had not been interviewed.
One of the conditions of application for positions with the City Corporation is that canvassing of city councillors means disqualification. In the face of this the above happenings surely show some weakness on the part of those in authority.—l am, etc., Foo. [“ This is not a matter for public discussion," said Cr E. J. Anderson, chairman of the City Council Transport Committee, when asked to comment on this letter. Cr Anderson suggested that the writer approach Hr L. C. Greig, engineermanager of the Corporation Transport Department, and learn the facts of the case.—Ed., O.D.T.]
