MR W. MACHIN RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT P.A. TIMARU, May 12. Mr W. Machin, of Christchurch, was unanimously re-elected president of the New Zealand Catchment Boards’ Association at the annual conference at the Hermitage. The conference concluded its business last night. Messrs L. W. McCaskill (North Canterbury), F. C. Daniell (Wairarapa), and L. D. Mair (Rangitikei) were elected ,as the Education and Publicity Committee sponsored by the South Canterbury Catchment Board. The conference adopted a resolution recommending to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council that a more liberal subsidy be made available for planting approved varieties of trees, and, in some cases, the making of free grants to encourage more afforestation in the South Island hill country. Mr W. L. Newham, president, of the Soil Conservation Council, told delegates that free grants would be made where merited.
