“Socialist Manifesto” Causes Heated Debate Among Presbyterians
Rec. 9 p.m. MELBOURNE, May 12. A heated debate developed at the Presbyterian State General Assembly to-day when a report by the Christian Social Order Subcommittee was described as a Socialistic manifesto. The sub-committee asked the assembly to affirm that public ownership of the resources of the earth and the means of production, distribution and exchange is in keeping with Christian doctrine; that the adoption of the principle of public ownership and methods would lead to better relationships among men and nations; and that this principle should be commended to Presbyterian gatherings. A representative elder, Mr C. Homer Fraser, described the report as “a Socialistic manifesto reeking with partisanship, full of the usual catch cries, inaccurate and sloppy.” He added that, if its contents were affirmed, all Presbyterians who found Socialism a denial of freedom would be compelled to withdraw from the church. The report was rejected by the assembly, which ruled that the church was not yet ready to declare whether private or public enterprise was right.
