REMITS CONSIDERED
SECONDARY SCHOOLS' ASSOCIATION
Some of the 84 remits for the consideration of the annual conference of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Association were discussed vesterday afternoon. The remits so far dealt with by the conference mainly concerned curriculum and examination matters. It was pointed out, in some cases, that the proposals had been under discussion by the University Solicit©. The conference carried in amended form a remit that English should be compulsory for the University Entrance Examination. A remit that English or another language for Junior University Scholarship Examination was lost. , , , Other remits passed included:— “That the prescription of all subjects for the Junior University Scholarship Examination should be arranged so that they are a natural development of those of the University Entrance Examination. “ That in view of the doubtful validity of present methods of scaling external examination marks, a committee be set up with special respect to scaling among different assistant examiners and among different subjects, and that the University of New Zealand and the department be invited to co-operate. “ That • boarding bursaries for students taking fine arts courses with the object of becoming teachers of fine arts should be reviewed in order to bring them into line with the more liberal provision made for training college students, dental nurses and university students, and that the regulations governing present bursaries be clarified and made available, to the students.”
