Ministerial

It was announced yesterday that the Prime . Minister, Mr Fraser, will leave Auckland on May 29 by air for Samoa, v/here he will take part in the opening of the new Legislative Assembly and other ceremonies, including the hoisting of the new Samoan flag. His visit will', be a short one.

Mr James Barling returned by air to Dunedin yesterday after a six weeks’ visit to New South Wales and Queensland. Inspector D. L. Calwell, relieving officer in charge of the Dunedin Police district, and Inspector A. G. McHugh, are at present in Wellington attending an officers’ conference. Sub-inspector J. Crowley, Christchurch, is at present relieving at Dunedin.

After a visit of more than a year to Britain, South Africa, the United States and Canada, Sir Cecil Leys, chairman of directors of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., returned by the Union Company’s steamer Wairata this morning. He was accompanied by his son, Mr Hilton Leys, who has been engaged in journalism in England and the United States. Mr R. G. McNab, formerly headmaster at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, is now the British Council’s representative in Hungary. A visit to Hungary will shortly be made by Mr Arthur Porritt, the ex-Wanganui surgeon to the King, at the invitation of the British Council, to lecture on British surgery to Hungarian universities and hospital staffs. Mr J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., of Dunedin, celebrated his eightieth birthday yesterday. Mr Hanan was for half a century a member of the General Assembly. He entered the House of Representatives in 1899, representing the Invercargill electorate, a seat which he held until 1925, when he retired voluntarily. Mr Hanan was soon afterwards appointed to the Legislative Council. He had the distinction of being one of two Ministers of the Crown to be elected Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. The other Minister was Sir Robert Stout.
