Longwill, assistant superintendent of the pig industry, addressing the annual meeting of the Canterbury District Pig Council. The number of breeding sows had fallen from 116.000 in 1936, to 100,000 just before the war, and 68.000 in 1947 If quality pigs were to be produced at least 80,000 or 90,000 breeding sows were necessary.
