CONVINCING WIN

AUSTRALIANS AGAINST SURREY HOME TEAM’S PLUCKY BATTLE FOR TIME N.Z.P.A.—Copyright LONDON, May 11. , In dismissing Surrey for 195 in the second innings, Australia won easily by an innings and 296 runs. A draw would have been a more equitable result to reward Surrey’s plucky battle against time, which they lost by 23 minutes. Heavy rain just before play was due to begin slowed the pace of the wicket, which, though responsive to a turning ball, gave the batsmen plenty of time to watch the break. Mclntyre joined Squires with the total at three for 62. and the pair added 67 before Harvey took the first of two brilliant 'deep-fieid catches to dismiss Squires. This stand gave Surrey great heart, but when Mclntyre went their chances of playing out time were slim. Laker and Bedser stayed for a dogged 40 minutes. Surridge hit up a merry 20 before he fell to Harvey’s second running high catch. W. Johnston’s figures, four for 40, reflected his merit. Other Australian bowlers were not impressive. Umcire Harry Baldwin called Lindwall s first ho-ball of the tour in his fourteenth over. Baldwin Consistently no-balled the Australian fast bowler, Ernie McCormick, on the 1938 tour.
