GROWING IMPORTANCE
TECHNICAL EDUCATION RADICAL CHANGES FORESEEN “In an increasingly mechanical world, where industry frequently calls upon science for assistance, technical education is playing an ever more important part,” said Mr A. F. McMurtrie. Acting Director of Education, at the opening of the annual conference of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association yesterday. “ Technical colleges will be undertaking new duties in the near future involving fundamental changes.” In common with other types of school, technical institutions were at present operating under severe handicaps imposed by shortages of accommodation for both staff and pupils and shortages of equipment. Not the least of current' troubles lay with the pupils who formerly did not proceed beyond the lower standards.
Peopie critical of present-day education should be informed of the wider aims wmch had superseded the older ideas, Mr McMurtrie added. The future of education was being placed increasingly in tne hands of younger teachers with new methods. Education could be made the finest partnership in the world —that between parent and teacher. 'ln our ability to render successfully our unique service to the community lies the future of education,” he concluded.
