ANZAC DAY
OBSERVANCE BY BUTCHERS And grocers POSITION IN WELLINGTON P.A. WELLINGTON, Apl. 19. Most awards exempt Anzac Day from being observed on a Monday when it falls on a Sunday, as it does this year, but butchers’ and grocers’ shops will be closed for a holiday on Monday next. The position was explained by Mr W. J. Mountjoy, secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Association. He said the Wellington industrial district butchers’ awards prescribed Anzac Day as a holiday, and it was also prescribed in the awards that, should any of the holidays named therein fall on a Sunday they should be observed on the following Monday. The N.Z.R.S.A. view is that it is not in keeping with the spirit of Anzac Day to permit of a special holiday on some other day when Anzac Day falls on a Sunday. The association announced towards the end of last month that an assurance had been given by the Minister of Labour that, in practically all awards of the Arbitration Court where Anzac Day was included in the list of holidays, a clause was inserted stating: “Should any of the above holidays except Anzac Day fall on a Sunday, then for the purpose of this award it shall be observed on the following Monday.’’
