WOMEN’S HOCKEY

AUSTRALIAN TEAM'S VISIT TOURNAMENT AND TEST IN DUNEDIN P.A. WELLINGTON, Apl. 18. The Australian women’s hockey team which is to visit New Zealand this year, will take part in the annual tournament in Dunedin, where it will also play a test match on a date to be arranged. This was approved at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association. The Australian team will arrive at Auckland by air on August 16. The team’s itinerary is:— August 18: v. Auckland. August 21: v. Rangitikei, at Marton. August 24: v. Wellington. August 26 to September 4: at Dunedin for New Zealand tournament and test match. September 8: v. Canterbury. September 11: v. Rotorua, at Hamilton. To finance the tour the association’s overseas fund will be drawn on and a levy of Is per player' struck. To preserve the fund, a further Is per player will be levied in the following season. The following New Zealand selectors were appointed.—Mrs Iggo (Canterbury), Miss Wilkins (Wellington), and Miss Wilkie (Marton). For financial reasons it was decided to decline the invitation to tour South Africa. The annual tournament is to be operated this year on a new basis with separate sections for major and minor associations. Each association will have the option of entering for whatever section it desires. Waikato was admitted as a separate association. Otago withdrew, its remit asking for the headquarters of the association to be transferred from Wellington to Christchurch for alternate periods of five years, Canterbury advising that it was not prepared in the meantime to accept the headquarters. Auckland advised that it would be applying for the 1949 championships. The following officers were elected:— President, Mrs Sontagg (Otago); secretary, Miss J. H. Poulter; assistant secretary, Mrs E. Moore; treasurer, Miss M. Sparks; executive—Misses E. Jeffery, I. M. Pearce, C. M. Wilkins, and Mrs F. Brugh.

Friendly matches were played at Logan Park on Saturday between teams from the Milton Ladies’ Hockey Club and Dunedin Training College. Training College A 7 defeated Milton A 2, and Training College B 5 defeated Milton B 1. Goals were scored for Training College in the senior match by W. Leslie (3), K. Brown (3), and E. Hoskin (1), whilst J. Hill and B. Hood netted for Milton.
