WIN FOR UNIVERSITY A Withstanding a series of determined attacks by Pirates in the first 10 minutes of play in the second match at Carisbrook. University A settled down to sound and constructive football, and after leading at half time by 6 points to nil finished winners by 9 points to 3. Although Pirates hooked the ball with monotonous regularity from the set scrums, this advantage was lost because the half-back, A. L. Mclndoe, did far too much running on his own. The University forwards, however, launched many attacking movements from line-out and loose scrummaging play, and they were splendidly led by K. J. O’Connor, who played with dash throughout. P. B. Dignan (outstanding in the line-out work) and R. D. Fraser gave O’Connor strong support. The University backs showed all-round superiority, and the feature of their play was the pace and combination of the three-quarters, comprising I. J. Botting, J. M. Tanner and C. Moore, the last-named making a promising first appearance in senior Sapsford impressed in the Pirates pack, Sapsford impressed in the Pirates’ pack, and E. Dowland hooked competently. C. J. McDonald was the best of the back? S. Sutherland received a leg injury in the second half and had to be carried -off the field. Fraser and O. Ellis scored tries for the winners, and T. F. C. Geary kicked a goal from a penalty. R. D. Darracott scored a try for Pirates. None of the tries were converted. Mr J. Frood was the referee.
