OBITUARY

MR SINCLAIR CARRUTHERS PA. WELLINGTON, Apl. 18. After a long illness, Mr Sinclair Carruthers, chairman of directors of the advertising firm of Carlton-Carruthers du Chateau and King, died at his home at Lowry Bay to-day. Born in Scotland 54 years ago, Mr Carruthers emigrated to Australia as a youth. He took up pineapple growing in Queensland, and there won a reputation in sport He represented Queensland in League football and developed as a fine sprinter. He enlisted in the A.I.F. early in the First World War, and saw four years’ service before being invalided out after being gassed m FrallCe . x AT Mr Carruthers came to New Zealand to recuperate soon after the war, and established himself in Auckland as advertising manager of the Mirror. He later joined the firm of Gordon and Gotch, and then joined with Carlton Studios in the forming of an advertising agency, Carlton-Carruthers, whose head office he ultimately transferred to Wellington. Mr Carruthers formed Radio Features some time before the Second World War as an associate company of Carlton-Carruthers. For a time he was a member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce executive. Mr Carruthers was married to Miss Mildred Corbett, formerly of Auckland, who survives him. There are four young sons and a daughter.

MR JAMES M. OSLER P.A. WAIROA, Apl. 17. The death is announced of Mr James Mitchell Osier, aged 75, one of Wairoa’s most prominent business men and a resident here for over 40 years. Mr Osier played an important part in various patriotic appeals during the war, and was of a very generous nature, forwarding goods valued at hundreds of pounds to the troops overseas. For a term he was a member of the Wairoa Harbour Board and played a prominent part in other organisations, being for over 15 years the patron of the bowling club and also an enthusiastic member of Lodge Waikaremoana.
