CONSTABLE ATTACKED
BRUTALLY BEATEN BY MOB ATTEMPT TO ARREST SUSPECT Rec. 9 p.m. MELBOURNE. Apl. 18. A mob of 200 brutally kicked and bashed a constable outside the South Melbourne football ground when two plain-clothes constables were endeavouring to arrest suspected pickpockets. The constable, James Mcllwaine, aged 33, was treated later for lacerations and abrasions. The constables arrested the suspects when boarding a tram after a League football match. The suspects shouted for help to the crowd leaving the gates. Immediately the crowd swarmed abput the policemen, knocking Mcllwaine down and helping one suspect to escape. Fighting his way to his feet, Mcllwaine saw a suspect board a citybound tram. He gave chase, boarded the rear of the tram, and arrested the man when the tram reached the city. The other man was held until police reinforcements arrived.
