BELIEVED DROWNED
FRUITLESS SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN FISHING LINES ON ROCKS P.A. AUCKLAND, Apl. 17. An elderly man who has been missing from his home at Karekare, near Piha, since Thursday morning is believed to have been drowned while fishing. He is Ernest Edward Murfitt, aged 62, a retired married man, of Karekare. Taking his fishing tackle with him, Murfitt left home on Thursday morning accompanied by two of his dogs. Although he did not return Tor lunch his wife was not alarmed. At about 2.30 p.m. one of the dogs returned, and about 5 p.m. the other. Mrs Murfitt then went out to look for her husband, but could find no trace of him. She called some neighbours, who organised a search party, which continued its efforts until a late hour without result. The party resumed its search this morning, and discovered some tangled fishing lines on the rocks where Murfitt was in the habit of fishing. No trace of the missing man had been found as the sea had become very rough. It is feared that Murfitt was swept off the rocks while fishing.
