NEGRO BOXERS EXPLOITED
FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER’S CLAIM i CANBERRA, Apl. 14. A charge that many negro boxers who came to Australia were exploited by managers who remained in the United States was made to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, who intimated that no change in dollar provisions concerning negro boxers was likely. Mr Chifley said that when the restrictions were first imposed he had been told that boxing in Australia would be ruined. This had not occurred. “ The fact is that many negro boxers who come here are exploited,” he added. “They are dumped here like so much baggage and their managers stay in the United States collecting often 50 per cent., never less than 33 per cent., of their earnings. Boxers can take only £IOOO in dollars out of the country, which means that, after the manager has taken his cut, the boxer earns only £SOO. I cannot see that the amount under dollar restrictions should be eased to help managers exploit boxers.”
