SUPPLY OF COAL
"EARLY improvement ASSURANCE TO HOUSEWIVES’ ASSOCIATION An assurance that the distribution of coal, and bright coal in particular, would improve in the near future had been obtained from official sources, it was reported at the annual meeting of the Housewives' Association, held in the Pioneer Women's Memorial Hall yesterday. When a new seam near Linton was opened shortly, it was stated, more coal would become available. Reasons for the high cost of the making of bread, the difference in quality, and the inability of bakers to deliver the bread, were discussed. “ Extras ” which were added to the bread to bring it up to the quality expected by the customer were costly. These included gluten flour, fats, milk powder, condensed milk, and other items, which had all increased in price. To keep the cost down, some bakers did not use all or some of these extras; therefore, quality suffered. The type of wheat, milling, and the housewife who did not empty her bin before adding more flour were blajned for the poor keeping qualities of flour. The cost of machinery and improvements were a problem for the baker, and were insufficiently covered by subsidies, and bread was still sold at the pre-war price. Insufficient petrol also hampered deliveries. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs A. Fullerton (re-elected); secre-tary-treasurer. Mrs Rust (re-elected); vice-presidents, Miss McEvoy and Mrs Wilson: committee—Mesdames Wylie, Ross and Jones; delegates to the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Association, Mrs Smith and Mrs Paris; delegate to the National Council of Women, Mrs Fullerton.
