POLICE SUPERINTENDENT

FAREWELL PRESENTATION About 50 members of the Police Force in the Dunedin district gathered yesterday to make a farewell presentation to Superintendent D. Scott, who will begin his retiring leaye shortly. The president of * the Police Social Club, Sergeant G. E. S. Kelly, presided. Inspector A. G. McHugh spoke of the great respect which the superintendent had earned from all ranks during his three years and a-half in Dunedin. He had kept the welfare of the men at heart, especially in sickness, and had made greatnmprovements in general conditions. Superintendent Scott had maintained intimate contact with the men in the country stations, where he helped to provide better amenities and houses. Other speakers were Senior Sergeant D. Vaughan, Senior Sergeant J. H. S. Hogg, Chief Detective T. Y. Hall, Senior Sergeant E. J. C. Hay (South Dunedin), Sergeant J. Devlin (North Dunedin), Sergeant C. J. R. Bissett, Sergeant J. O’Shae (Port Chalmers), Sergeant A. Stark (Mosgiel), Sergeant F. Leadley (District Office), Constable F W Exell (suburban constables). Constable P. Swan (country staff), Matron L. Rablenski (women’s staff), Miss K. Palmer (women’s division of the force), Constable. G. T. Dwan (Police Barracks) and Constable P. Matheson. Superintendent Scott, in reply, said his service in Dunedin, which concluded a period of 43 years in the force, had been pleasant. Otago residents were particularly friendly and lawabiding. To members of the force he said: “I thank all ranks in both branches for the maner in which you have done your duty, with loyalty to the public and the department, without fear or favour, and without being harsh.’’
